What can you do to modernize a lobby on a conservative budget while increasing the value of a building? For this lobby upgrade in West Vancouver, we allocated the majority of the budget on timeless, long-lasting materials for major surfaces such as flooring and walls. We used contrasting colour and form to create a feature entrance area, and kept large expanses neutral. Teal seating fabric on modern swivel chairs made a bold statement, a thoughtful choice knowing they could be replaced over time. Because a large part of this hi-rise population are seniors, we made sure that seating was easy to rise out of and comfortable. In the end, we retained existing finishes and materials that weren’t as noticeable, such as the elevator handrails, and focused on bigger impact choices. All costs were kept within budget, creating ultimate value for the owners.
