What I love most about travel is that it reminds me that our best design cues come from what has been before. This summer I found my favourite morning spot, watching the boats cruise by on the Amalfi Coast. Around the home design world, whitewashed arches, curving sofas, brick and terrazzo have all made a major comeback, yet we’ve been enjoying these “trends” for decades, even centuries.  This is where sustainability is at it’s most basic and beautiful, not changing a thing over time.

Technology is improving the way we don’t need to “use up” more of these beautiful, natural materials. 3D printing is creating most anything we have built in the past, probing the design potential of mass-customized architectural components. I applaud original design thinking. Now I need to get back to my drawing board.
